The subject covers work within critical linguistics, social semiotics, and post-structuralist theories of discourse and language. The focus is on how discourses work in the construction and maintenance of relations of power in society. The subject aims to develop and strengthen a critical understanding of theories of language and discourse and to apply this understanding, using specific methods of analysis, in different contexts. Case studies for specific analysis include: policy legislation; classroom and workplace interaction; official documents; the written language of the workplace; academic writing; and the media and information technology.
