Overview

The Master of Arts in TESOL is a practice-oriented course designed for those wishing to teach English as a foreign or second language. The course has been designed to cater for both trained teachers wishing to upgrade their qualifications, and those wishing to obtain an initial teaching qualification.

The course is specifically designed to meet the needs of international students by providing additional English language tuition and support, as well as a range of subjects that are relevant to the needs of those working in the profession of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education.

Course aims

The course aims to enable students to consolidate or extend their specialist professional competence as practitioners in teaching spoken and written English in an international context.

Career options

Career options include leadership roles in the TESOL field such as curriculum developers, researchers, program managers or exemplary teachers.

Additional admission requirements

Applicants require:

  • an undergraduate degree or equivalent from a recognised university (essential)
  • some teaching experience (desirable), and
  • an IELTS of at least 6.5 overall with 6.0 in writing (TOEFL 550).

Additional recognition of prior learning

Students who possess a recognised teaching qualification and English language teaching experience may be exempt from up to four subjects.

Course duration and attendance

Students commence this course in Autumn or Spring semester and attend full time.

The course is normally completed in one-and-a-half years of full-time study, or one year of full-time, on-campus study with exemption from Professional Experience and English Support subjects.

Course structure

The course totals 72 credit points, made up of eight compulsory subjects and four subjects chosen from the list of possible electives given in CBK90265.

English language support is fully integrated into the course. At entry, students receive initial English language training specifically for this course. Tutorial support is provided at each stage of the course and provides specific support for each of the subjects undertaken.
