Overview
Today's local government manager must have a high level of professional expertise together with a broad range of managerial skills and a sound understanding of the special characteristics of local government. The Graduate Certificate in Local Government Management is tailored to the local government environment, allowing managers to meet their differing professional needs, while keeping up-to-date with the latest issues.
Tailored to the local government environment, the course enables participants to build an education program that responds to individual needs as it allows students to develop a study plan that matches the requirements of their professional development. Subjects can be studied in the workplace, through intensive block release. The course can also be used as a stepping stone to a Master of Local Government (C04257).
Career options
The course is particularly suited to local government middle-tier managers and unit leaders who wish to advance their careers. It is also highly recommended for public administrators from other tiers of government and professionals from the non-government sector who work in partnership with local councils for the benefit of local and regional communities.

Admission requirements
Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.
Applicants must have one of the following UTS recognised academic qualifications or an equivalent (according to NOOSR or UK NARIC):
- Completed Bachelor’s degree
- Completed Graduate Certificate
- Completed Graduate Diploma
- Completed Master’s degree or Doctoral degree.
Applicants who do not satisfy the above requirements may be considered on the following:
- a minimum 3 years full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant work experience*, AND
- a CV clearly articulating work experience*, AND
- a Personal Statement (max. 300 words) demonstrating an understanding of basic local management concepts gained from work experience and knowledge of course expectations.
*Work experience from within the following ANZSCO Occupation descriptors is deemed as relevant: 13. Specialist Managers, 22. Business, Human Resources and Marketing Professionals, 23. Design, Engineering, Science and Transport Professions, 51. Office Managers and Program Administrators.
The English proficiency requirement for local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.

Course duration and attendance
The course is offered on a one-year, part-time basis.

Exit award
With prior approval, students who have completed 24 credit points of study in the Graduate Diploma in Local Government Management (C06033) can exit their studies with a Graduate Certificate in Local Government Management.
