Overview

The Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) offers training in research and introduces advanced areas of study in medical science.

This course provides students with a unique opportunity to undertake original research and gain in-depth knowledge in a particular field of medical science. Honours students have access to staff that are leading researchers and experts in their field. Undertaking an honours course allows students to explore their research potential and develop research skills. Honours also provides a pathway for students interested in pursuing postgraduate studies at masters and PhD level, and enhances graduate's career and study options.

Career options include medical researcher, scientist or health-related professional in organisations such as hospitals, medical research institutes, pathology laboratories and universities, and in industries dealing with biochemicals, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.

Course intended learning outcomes

1.1 Apply: Identify and critically examine how disease can arise and disrupt normal physiological function.
1.2 Analyse: Select and appraise appropriate advanced technology and tools to detect and diagnose diseases.
1.3 Synthesise: Combine the principles of precision medicine and human genetics to solving complex problems and analysing case studies in the medical field.
2.1 Apply: Demonstrate advanced experimental design and sampling to conduct appropriate studies to test hypotheses addressing medical science investigations.
2.2 Analyse: Examine and use appropriate advanced scientific tools in the design and execution of medical science research.
2.3 Synthesise: Hypothesise and formulate new perspectives and solutions to current and emerging complex medical science challenges.
3.1 Apply: Develop advanced health and medical solutions for complex local and the global communities.
3.2 Analyse: Display well-developed ethical practice in the medical science sector.
3.3 Synthesise: Work responsibly, safely, and with respect to diversity, within ethical, academic, and regulatory frameworks relevant to medical science.
4.1 Apply: Engage in well-developed reflective practices as a lifelong learner and incorporate these into everyday practice as a medical scientist.
4.2 Analyse: Evaluate and critically appraise current evidence based literature to determine best practices and gaps in medical research and knowledge.
4.3 Synthesise: Work creatively to translate the results of complex medical research to improve the clinical care of patients and/or the mechanisms of disease.
5.1 Apply: Communicate complex medical science disciplinary knowledge effectively in a number of multimedia forms to a wide range of audiences.
5.2 Analyse: Demonstrate high level of writing, reading, and speaking in English.
5.3 Synthesise: Practice the requirements for presentation of research data through preparation of oral and written works.
6.1 Apply: Identify how diagnostic procedures impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
6.2 Analyse: Examine the unique health needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
6.3 Synthesise: Incorporate knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities when engaging as professionals in the health sector, as technicians, practitioners and colleagues.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline at an appropriate level.

The honours program is normally open to students who have attained at least a credit average over the final two-thirds of the undergraduate program.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Course duration and attendance

The course is offered on a one-year, full-time basis.

Course structure

The major component of the course is a research project that extends over the full duration of the course and normally takes the form of an experimental or analytical investigation, undertaken either in the laboratory or the field. Candidates may also be required to undertake one or more critical reviews of the scientific literature in designated areas and to attend formal classes devoted to advanced coursework. The results of the project are presented in an oral seminar and in a written thesis, both of which are formally assessed.
