Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Design is an entry-level postgraduate course that allows students with a Bachelor’s degree in a discipline other than Design to transition into the Master of Design (Service Design) or Master of Design (Design Leadership). The course draws on aspects of the School’s highly-regarded undergraduate design program to provide the design research and practice fundamentals required for the emerging and increasingly important disciplines of Social and Service Design, and Design Leadership.

The course is designed to support entry into the Master of Design. It is possible for the course to provide an exit degree option for students enrolled in the Master of Design (C04429), who want a one-session (24 credit points) experience of postgraduate coursework in design. Subjects offered are drawn from the Master of Design suite of subjects.

Course aims

The course provides an introductory experience of postgraduate coursework in design. Students undertake self-directed modules, workshops and studios in collaboration with industry leaders, including the Design Innovation Research Centre, the only Social Design agency embedded within an Australian University. This association enables students to test and extend their design research, visualization and prototyping skills in a practice setting.

Career options

The course offers graduates in a non-design background an opportunity to acquire design research, visualization and prototyping skills that allow them craft persuasive design propositions. Graduates' careers are enhanced by higher-level design knowledge and expertise. Students wishing to acquire more developed skills in social and service design or design leadership should choose to complete the Master of Design (C04429).

Course intended learning outcomes

A.2 Co-create shared value propositions that benefit all stakeholders
A.3 Discern consequences of designs (ecological, social and justice impacts)
C.1 Communicate using a wide range of media and techniques
C.3 Collaborate with Indigenous communities and leaders
I.1 Design for and with, and enable designing by, diverse stakeholders
I.3 Lead constructive and compassionate design critiques
P.3 Facilitate collective decision-making around design directions
R.1 Generate valid insights using qualitative research methods
R.3 Enable Indigenous-led research and design
