Overview
This course offers a sound education in all aspects of computing science and information technology. It is intended for students who aspire to become researchers or who want a career in a more scientific-oriented computing area. As such it provides a pathway to postgraduate research study.
This course adopts a practice-based approach to computing science education and the course content is a mix of theory and practice, with a stronger focus on the mathematics appropriate for computing science and research projects. As well as gaining strong technical skills in computing science and IT, students gain skills in problem-solving, teamwork and communication. Students undertake research projects with UTS researchers. Employers look for graduates with strong computing science skills and, in this course, students are exposed to real research problems in computing science and IT.
UTS: Information Technology continues to support part-time study and some subjects can be taken in the evening as well as during the day.
Course aims
The course aims to produce graduates who are able to apply, in the context of any organisation, the knowledge and skills required of:
- information technology professionals who develop systems from first principles
- computing specialists for technical research careers, both in industry and academia, or
- data scientists who interrogate complex datasets.
Career options
Depending on the major selected, career options include software developer, systems analyst, data scientist or professional computing science researcher.
Course intended learning outcomes
A.1 | Historically and Culturally Informed about Indigenous Knowledge Systems: FEIT graduates are culturally and historically well informed, able to co-design projects as respectful professionals when working in and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. |
B.1 | Socially Responsible: Bachelor of Computing Science (Honours) graduates understand stakeholder needs and demonstrate social, ethical, and cultural awareness when researching and creating technical solutions for diverse audiences. |
C.1 | Design Oriented: Bachelor of Computing Science (Honours) graduates apply advanced understanding in the areas of critical thinking, problem solving, design and decision-making methodologies to develop research solutions to complex problems. |
D.1 | Technically Proficient: Bachelor of Computing Science (Honours) graduates apply abstraction, mathematics and discipline fundamentals, software tools and state-of-the-art techniques to critically evaluate, design and implement systems. |
E.1 | Collaborative and Communicative: Bachelor of Computing Science (Honours) graduates work as an effective member or leader of diverse teams, communicating effectively and operating within cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural contexts. |
F.1 | Reflective: Bachelor of Computing Science (Honours) graduates critically self-review their professional performance, in collaboration with researchers, to improve themselves, their teams and workplace. They take responsibility and accountability for their own life long learning. |
Admission requirements
Applicants must have completed an Australian Year 12 qualification, Australian Qualifications Framework Diploma, or equivalent Australian or overseas qualification at the required level.
Current school leavers are advised to complete the Year 12 Engineering and IT Questionnaire. The questionnaire allows applicants to demonstrate their strong motivation to study engineering or IT at UTS and may assist applicants whose ATAR falls short of the required cut-off by up to three points.
The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184.
Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.
International students
Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.
Pathway course
Applicants who complete the UTS College Diploma of Information Technology with:
- no more than two subject failures (international applicants); or
- the required minimum grade point average (domestic applicants)
are guaranteed admission to the Bachelor of Computing Science (Honours) with up to 48 credit points of recognition of prior learning.
Assumed knowledge
HSC Mathematics Extension 1 and any two units of English. English Advanced is recommended.
Recognition of prior learning
Students who have previously undertaken relevant study at a recognised tertiary education institution may be eligible for recognition of prior learning (RPL) if the subjects completed are deemed by the faculty to be equivalent to subjects in the course. Study completed more than three years prior to the date of admission cannot be recognised. Limits apply to the number of credit points of RPL granted.
Course duration and attendance
This course is offered on a four-year, full-time or eight-year, part-time basis.
Course structure
Students are required to complete 192 credit points, comprising core (96 credit points), major (48 credit points), electives (24 credit points), and research preparation and project (24 credit points).
All students complete a common set of subjects in Year 1 and are required to select their major prior to enrolling in Year 2.
Industrial training/professional practice
Industrial training is available by concurrently enrolling in the Diploma in Information Technology Professional Practice (C20056). The diploma comprises a minimum of nine months' full-time paid work experience and supporting subjects at UTS.
