Description

This subject provides students with the opportunity to further explore design in relation to art, the body and form. A lecture series addresses notions of fashion's connection to art, conceptual design practices, alternative perceptions of couture practices and different forms of fashion presentation. Students pursue individual interests in terms of design and its application into a fashion context.

Subject learning objectives (SLOs)

On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:

1. debate and discuss a wide range of issues informing fashion design today
2. further their skills in critical analysis of their own design work and the research that informs this work
3. carry out independent in depth enquiry and conceptual research surrounding an issue
4. explore creative interpretation of ideas into design solutions
5. visual and written representation of ideas and designs
6. explore shape, form and silhouette in relation to the human form.

Content (topics)

The subject is facilitated through a combination of lectures and design studio. Where relevant site visits will be included into the program to promote research methods and inquiry. Lectures promote theoretical inquiry and observation of case studies and pre-empt design studio, they are forums for explanation and contextualisation of briefs. The subject will cover the following topic areas:

  1. Theoretical issues in contemporary fashion today, interpretation of the conceptual fashion idea.
  2. "Alternative" issues for debate e.g. fashion as art/ art as fashion, fashion and the media, the industry of fashion, fashion and the east.
  3. Fashion and the consumer, viewer and perceiver.
  4. The designer's role e.g. fashion as art, the creative process, conceptual proposals. Designer's role of challenging ideas of fashion creation and presentation through their design practice.

Minimum requirements

The Faculty of DAB expects students to attend 80% of all classes for all enrolled subjects. Achievement of the subject's aims is difficult if classes are not attended. Where assessment tasks are to be presented personally in class, attendance is mandatory.

Pusuant to UTS rule 3.8.2, students who do do not satisfy attendance requirements may be refused permission by the Responsible Academic Officer to be considered for assessment for this subject
