Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Information Systems (IS) is an entry-level course and is part of an articulated postgraduate program in Information Systems.

The Graduate Certificate in IS provides a background in information systems to enable professionals to effectively understand and engage in areas involving IS.

Professionals working in almost every field will encounter the need to understand IS. This course allows professionals an entry into the increasingly essential area of IS, to expand their career prospects.

Course aims

This entry level course is designed to enable professionals with a non-cognate degree to acquire knowledge and skills in IS. It also allows those who wish to expand their IS abilities even further, the opportunity to articulate into the full Master of IS course.

Course intended learning outcomes

A.1 Historically and Culturally Informed about Indigenous Knowledge Systems: FEIT graduates are culturally and historically informed, with awareness of ethical practices when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
B.1 Socially Responsible: Graduate Certificate in Information Systems graduates are able to engage with a broad range of IS stakeholders (beyond IT users), to establish priorities and goals, identify constraints, uncertainties, and the personal, organisational, policy impact of IS in diverse contexts.
C.1 Design Oriented: Graduate Certificate in Information Systems graduates are able to apply judgment and research skills in the co-design and evaluation of ethical, sustainable and innovative solutions to organisational, societal and global problems.
D.1 Technically Proficient: Graduate Certificate in Information Systems graduates are able to demonstrate knowledge and skills for research, technical skills in IS design, implementation and evaluation methods, and tools and techniques, including appropriate software tools.
E.1 Collaborative and Communicative: Graduate Certificate in Information Systems graduates are able to communicate to specialist and non-specialist audiences and collaborate across functional and hierarchical boundaries, within and across organisations, in local contexts.
F.1 Reflective: Graduate Certificate in Information Systems graduates are able to work and thrive in the world of constant technological change by being self-reflective, curious, thoughtful and life-long learning professionals, dedicated to making a positive difference in organisations.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

It is a requirement that the bachelor's degree was completed with no more than 25 per cent of subjects failed.

Applicants who do not satisfy the above academic requirements may be considered on the basis of a minimum two years' full-time equivalent relevant work experience, supported by the submission of a resume and proof of employment.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Recognition of prior learning

Recognition of prior learning is not offered for subjects in this course.

The substitution of core subjects to an alternative postgraduate subject in a similar field of study may be granted on a case by case basis.

Course duration and attendance

The course duration is half a year of full-time study or one year of part-time study.

Course structure

Students are required to complete 24 credit points of the information systems core subjects.

Articulation with UTS courses

This course is part of an articulated program comprising the Graduate Certificate in Information Systems, the Graduate Diploma in Information Systems (C06134), the Master of Information Systems (C04405), the Master of Information Systems (Extension) (C04401) and the Master of Information Systems (Advanced) (C04402).

Students who wish to articulate from this course to either of the master's courses are typically eligible for 24 credit points of recognition of prior learning.
