Description

This subject is the second in a series of four subjects designed to provide students who have no prior knowledge of the Spanish language with the basic survival skills in language and culture. Emphasis is given to the development of speaking and listening skills required to establish and maintain relationships in social or work-related spheres, and fulfil basic survival needs in a Spanish-speaking environment. Students also expand their reading and writing skills. In addition the subject focuses on the development of sociocultural understanding relevant to appropriate language use. This subject corresponds to Level A2 (basic user) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe). This subject forms the basis for further study (Spanish 3).

Subject learning objectives (SLOs)

a. communicate effectively in oral and written form, in Spanish, within the range of situations set out in the subject program. This corresponds to the skill set for students at the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
b. demonstrate a progression of language development through autobiographical and bibliographical accounts in oral and written genres.
c. demonstrate critical cultural awareness of and intercultural competencies relating to Spanish -speaking peoples and their relationship to appropriate language use
d. develop independent learning skills through individual, group tasks, including Online activities

Course intended learning outcomes (CILOs)

This subject engages with the following Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs), which are tailored to the Graduate Attributes set for all graduates of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (INT = International Studies CILOs):

  • Employ effective cultural strategies to operate within professional settings in Australia and internationally. (INT.1.1)
  • Reflect on and use knowledge of contemporary societies to engage with diverse cultures. (INT.3.1)
  • Develop capacity to engage with current issues and to act ethically in Australian and international settings. (INT.5.1)
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in written and spoken English. (INT.6.1)

Teaching and learning strategies

In order to maximise students’ potential for effective communication in the target language, Genre Based Pedagogy, through the Teaching and Learning Cycle (TLC) (Ross and Martin 2012), is used in class to develop literacy advanced-ness. This pedagogy links teaching and research in language acquisition. A series of scaffolding activities are used in this process.

Interactive activities through work in pairs, small and large groups and/or presentations, are promoted in class to enhance students' engagement through content based learning. Preparation for class activities requires students to complete exercises and reading/listening/viewing activities prior to coming to class and for them to make effective use of resources and subject material (including UTS online), community and peer resources available to them to support their learning.

Students will customise their learning experience as per the Global Spanish approach to promote their engagement with Hispanic-phone peoples and societies. This entails keeping in mind one’s goals for the use of Spanish (for instance studying abroad or travel in a particular country or region) and tailoring one’s practice and learning to maximize exposure to local variants of the language, relevant cultural norms and authentic materials from the area.

As part of an immersive approach, students are expected to use only Spanish when communicating with each other or with their teacher in class.

As this is an 8 credit point subject, the approximate time commitment expected from students is 12 hours per week, including class time.
