Description
This subject covers the origin and nature of property title and tenure and the issues associated with the determination of the physical extent of property title. Maps, plans and digital information are used for the computation and assessment of spatial information in the measure of land and elements of the built environment.
Subject learning objectives (SLOs)
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
1. | demonstrate an understanding of the history of NSW land tenure and the present day context, contrasted nationally and internationally |

2. | report on the operation of the NSW cadastre in terms of the origin and maintenance of property boundaries |
3. | work within the physical process of changing property boundaries |
4. | undertake the basic computations involved with land boundaries and areas |
5. | understand the concept of level and contours |
6. | read and understand the uses and limitations of various types of maps and plans and recognise the importance of map projections, datum and scale |
7. | work within the NSW cadastral system |
8. | recognise the different types of land information that constitutes the NSW title system |
9. | work with the various types of plans and maps encountered in property practice |
10. | communicate effectively with land surveyors and other users of spatial information, and to understand the scope of surveying technologies and applications |
11. | perform elementary practical computations and critically assess the quality of spatial information |
12. | describe the various types of interest in land and how they are accommodated within the NSW land title system |
13. | appreciate the importance and accurate to land title and measurement |
14. | debate the historical forces that have shaped NSW cadastral surveying and title, and future pressures for change. |
Teaching and learning strategies
This subject is presented through 2 hour weekly lectures and small group work sessions on campus. Topics, including case studies will be presented throughout face-to-face lectures. Students will be required to undertake group work, independent student reading, as well as online discussion about the topics presented throughout the semester.

- Types of Torrens Title, Deposited Plan creation, and the lodgment process at the Land and Property Management Authority
- Digital boundary definition;
- Digital map and plan use;
- Digital survey technologies;
- Cadastral Surveying and Engineering/Construction Surveys;
- Measurement and Leveling.
