Understanding what is happening in China, and the country's rising global and regional significance, are important issues for Australia and the broader global community. One of the world's oldest civilisations, China is now the world's most populous country and has the world's second largest economy. China is Australia's largest export destination, Australia's second largest inbound market for visitor arrivals, and the third most common country of birth for Australian residents. Yet Australia and China have different political, governing and financial systems.

Through arrangements made by UTS: International Studies, students who have completed the prerequisite subjects spend two consecutive semesters studying at one of the following universities:

• Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing
• Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan
• Renmin University, Beijing
• Shanghai University, Shanghai
• Tongji University, Shanghai
• Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Suzhou
• Yunnan University, Kunming
• Zhejiang University, Hangzhou

The focus in both semesters is on the study of language and culture. Students are assessed separately on each semester, with the assessment based on subjects undertaken at host institutions and assessment tasks administered by UTS: International Studies.

Students may expect that no greater costs are incurred through undertaking a period of In-country Study in China than are involved in living away from home in Sydney.

In exceptional circumstances, students with advanced skills in Chinese are excluded from the Chinese Language and Culture program and are required to substitute other appropriate subjects from the list of approved alternative subjects on offer in the International Studies program. Students need to obtain the approval of the head of UTS: International Studies before they can vary any of their subjects of study in the program.

Locations

Beijing

Beijing (Peking), in north-eastern China, is famous as the seat of contemporary government and for historic sites such as the Great Wall and Forbidden City. Beijing Institute of Technology, founded in 1940, has purpose-built accommodation for overseas students at the Haidian District campus. Renmin University, founded in 1937, also has purpose-built accommodation for overseas students at its Haidian District campus.

Hangzhou

Hangzhou, in Zhejiang province near Shanghai, is famous for its historic silk and tea industry, and the West Lake. Zhejiang University, founded in 1897, has purpose-built, single-room accommodation for overseas students at the Yuquan campus.

Kunming

Kunming, in Yunnan Province in south-western China bordering Burma, Laos and Vietnam, is famous for its climate, scenic beauty and diverse ethnic minority cultures. Yunnan University, founded in 1922, has purpose-built student accommodation in the centre of the old city.

Shanghai

Shanghai, on the Yangtze River Delta in east China, is a major cultural, commercial, financial, industrial and communication centre, famous for its cuisine, history and modern architecture. Shanghai University, founded in 1922, has purpose-built student accommodation at the Yanchang campus. Tongji University, founded in 1907, has purpose-built student accommodation at the Jiading campus.

Suzhou

Suzhou, in east China near Shanghai, is famous for its classical garden architecture, collectively a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is a new university with a world-class campus in a technology and innovation hub. Accommodation is provided off-campus for overseas students.

Wuhan

Wuhan, in central China, is famous for its historical relics and commerce. Huazhong University of Science and Technology, dubbed China's MIT, has purpose-built student accommodation.
