Overview

The Master of Business Analytics is a unique transdisciplinary program of study in business analytics. With subjects drawn from UTS Business School, the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology and the Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation, students are provided with a course structure that fits their background and experience, as well as flexible specialisations to meet new needs and career interests. The course is delivered in blended mode, combining contemporary online and face-to-face learning experiences in UTS’s leading-edge facilities. In addition to the on-campus degree, UTS offers an online Master of Business Analytics.

This course has been developed in consultation with industry in response to major global shortages in people with analytics skills, including a predicted shortfall of over 180,000 people with deep analytical skills and five times that number of data management and interpretation skills.

Course aims

A unique feature of the Business Analytics program is the inclusion of studios, where students apply the technical skills they develop onto real-world projects. Students in the Master of Business Analytics have the option of specialising in a wide choice of streams including Business Services Analytics, Data Analytics, Financial Analytics, Marketing, Software Development and Interaction Design stream.

Career options

The course is suitable for students from both business and IT backgrounds who seek to upskill and develop the skills required to meet the growth in emerging careers in business analytics. Career options are incredibly varied as virtually every company in every industry now collects huge amounts of data that needs to be interpreted and analysed to inform decision-making. Graduates from this program are able to provide valuable insights on matters such as fraud detection, and logistics optimisation through to customer acquisition and retention and demand forecasting.

Course intended learning outcomes

1.1 Integrate advanced data analysis techniques with business practices to generate actionable knowledge to inform and facilitate effective decision-making in local and international contexts
2.1 Research, identify and evaluate the current assumptions including the representation of Indigenous peoples implicit in data and the analytical techniques to facilitate business decision making in complex contexts
2.2 Present creative and innovative business solutions that reflect inclusivity, diversity and Indigenous perspectives
3.1 Convey business information clearly and fluently in written and verbal form appropraite for the problem, data and multiple audiences
3.2 Interact with colleagues and stakeholders to work effectively in teams and deliver agreed project outcomes
4.1 Critically evaluate and apply professional and research standards and principles of sustainability, ethical and social responsibility as well as Indigenous values as business analysts
5.1 Demonstrate expert technical and adaptive skills in business analytics relevant to complex contexts

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

Minimum Academic Requirement: The bachelor's degree should be in a related field within the business or information technology disciplines.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Pathway course

Students who do not meet the requirements to gain entry into the Master of Business Analytics may be eligible for entry into the Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics (C11280). Satisfactory completion of the UTS Graduate Certificate, allows students to articulate into the Master of Business Analytics.

Recognition of prior learning

Students in the Master of Business Analytics are not granted exemptions for any prior studies.

Course duration and attendance

The course can be completed in one-and-a-half years of full-time or three years of part-time study.

Course structure

The course totals 72 credit points and consists of a combination of core, including foundation stream, and elective subjects.

Students with a business background select STM91345 Foundation in IT stream (Business Analytics) (information technology foundation subjects) and students with information technology background select STM91344 Foundation in Business stream (Business Analytics) (business foundation subjects).

Students can also choose a specialisation from the following streams in CBK91806 Specialisation option (Business Analytics): Marketing Analytics (12 credit points), Financial Analytics (12 credit points), Business Services Analytics (12 credit points), Data Analytics (12 credit points), Software Development and Interaction Design (12 credit points), Internet (12 credit points), and Innovation (24 credit points) stream.

Electives can be taken in one of two ways: as multiple specialisations (usually two subjects, totalling 12 credit points for each specialisation), or as two specialisations (total 24 credit points), or four mixed electives (24 credit points).
