Overview

This course is designed for both property and planning practitioners, and graduates in related fields who wish to extend their qualifications and expertise in property development and planning. Graduates have a commitment to professionalism in the property and planning sector.

This course is for property and planning professionals who want to upgrade their qualifications or expertise or for those who wish to enter the property and planning industries. In their first year students develop an understanding of how to balance private and public interests in urban development, how urban economies work, how urban design and sustainability principles are applied, and how development feasibility is assessed.

Career options

Career options include positions in planning at local, metropolitan, and regional level, and property development in the private and public sectors.

Course intended learning outcomes

A.1 Identify and evaluate actual or potential ethical issues and determine sound ethical judgements in property development, planning, and / or scholarly contexts
A.2 Reflect on one's personal views and values and to comprehensively consider alternate views and propositions in property development, planning, and / or scholarly contexts
A.3 Understand the history of Indigenous Australians and their property rights, and apply this understanding to property and planning issues
C.1 Interpret and communicate knowledge, skills and ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences in property development, planning, and / or scholarly contexts
C.2 Work effectively in project teams in property development, planning, and / or scholarly contexts
I.1 Formulate appropriate alternative solutions applying creativity and initiative to complex problems in property development, planning, and / or related academic contexts
I.2 Apply urban design principles to develop creative solutions for urban problems
P.1 Integrate knowledge related to a wide spectrum of property and planning issues to the analysis of practice based scenarios
P.2 Think strategically about the future of cities and regions and understand the drivers of change
R.1 Apply and demonstrate knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to property development, planning, and / or related scholarly contexts

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

Applicants must satisfy one of the following:

  • a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or equivalent, at a pass level from one of the following disciplines: architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and regional planning, community development, property economics, property development, planning, geography, geography information systems (GIS), environmental science, economics, law, or
  • a UTS recognised bachelor's degree in an unrelated discipline, or
  • a UTS Graduate Certificate in Property and Planning with a credit average or above, or
  • a UTS Graduate Certificate in Planning with a credit average or above, or
  • a UTS Graduate Diploma in Property Development with a credit average or above, or
  • a UTS Graduate Diploma in Planning with a credit average or above.

Applicants with a completed UTS recognised bachelor's degree in an unrelated discipline need to provide a CV (max. three pages) outlining a minimum of two years' work experience in a profession closely related to urban planning.

Applicants who do not satisfy the academic requirements may be considered on their ability to demonstrate equivalency through a minimum of five years' relevant work experience. Applicants need to provide a CV (max. three pages) outlining their relevant work experience.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Course duration and attendance

The course duration is two years of full-time or four years of part-time study.

Course structure

Students must complete 96 credit points made up of 84 credit points of core subjects and 12 credit points of electives.
