Description
In this subject, students undertake preparatory interactive coursework followed by a professional internship with an organisation in the sport and exercise industry. This assists in practical and professional development, application of knowledge, and establishing contacts which contribute to the achievement of future career goals. Through their internship, students are exposed to the managerial and practical functions and activities of the sport industry, and are given an opportunity to apply and extend the skills and knowledge they have developed in other subjects. Following the preparatory coursework, students are required to undertake between 140 and 210 hours of work with an industry-based organisation and complete an agreed program of work designed to achieve predetermined learning objectives. Throughout the internship process, students receive formative feedback on their curriculum vitae and performance. Students keep a logbook throughout their internship and complete a report on their learning outcomes at its conclusion, where they also receive an evaluation of their performance from their workplace supervisor.

Teaching and learning strategies
The majority of a student’s time is spent in the workplace environment, where they reinforce their learning by maintaining a logbook. This experience is preceded by a compulsory preparatory workshop which involves instructive lectures, interactive activities such as resume review, mock interviews, industry and successful graduates’ presentations. Pre-class activities include the submission of a current CV that is workshopped and further developed within the coursework. There is also a detailed student manual and an interactive online module component to reinforce concepts covered within the coursework that can be accessed as each individual student progresses through the subject milestones at their own pace. On site guidance is provided by the external host organisation which must assign a workplace supervisor to the student, provide formative feedback at multiple points throughout the internship process, and evaluate the performance of their intern at the conclusion of the hours.

- Preparing the proposal: negotiating and securing an internship: defining learning objectives and associated work program
- Reflective learning and the role of the logbook

Post-internship:
- Reflection on the experience: final report and journal reflecting on personal development and learning outcomes and how to use these outcomes in the first stages of a career.
Assessment
Assessment task 1: Internship Foundation
Intent: | The Internship Foundation task enables students to prepare for the process of a formal internship application by developing a current Curriculum Vitae, and undertaking a face to face interview with the Subject Coordinator. The Project Proposal will outline the intended learning and internship tasks which are negotiated with the host organisation supervisor, and which provide the UTS Internship Officer with an opportunity to provide formative feedback prior to the commencement of an Internship. |

Assessment task 2: Portfolio
Intent: | The internship Portfolio will provide the student with an opportunity to critically review the professional internship experience. Students will articulate their personal and professional development from the time spent on Internship through the resubmission of their CV. They will also reflect on their experiences using the Project Proposal, Logbook and Supervisor Evaluation as the basis for their Internship Reflection. The portfolio will provide students with a snapshot of where they are at professionally at the conclusion of the Internship placement. |
