Overview

The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology and the Faculty of Business have developed this master's degree that provides all the advantages of a generalist Master of Business Administration with a focused engineering management program. The subjects offered in this course follow an integrated approach to professional practice through compulsory engineering management/professional engineering subjects, compulsory subjects relevant to business administration and an independent engineering graduate project in engineering management.

This program allows students to complete the Master of Engineering Management and Master of Business Administration in two years of full-time study.

This unique course is for students who have a bachelor's in engineering and who want to combine a Master of Engineering Management with a Master of Business Administration.

Career options

This course is suitable for professional engineers who want to master skills in engineering management and business administration. It is suitable for practising engineers who want to take up challenging and leadership roles in their organisation or career.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

It is a requirement that the bachelor's degree be in engineering with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.75/4 and less than 10 per cent fails.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Recognition of prior learning

Due to the reduced duration of this course (two years full-time rather than the usual three years required to complete the courses individually), there is no provision for recognition of prior learning based on undergraduate studies.

Course duration and attendance

The course is offered as a two-year, full-time course or can also be completed in four years of part-time study.

The course is made up of subjects that provide students with flexibility. Classes are usually held in standard mode (weekly attendance) or in block mode (attend classes only two or three times during the session per subject).

Course structure

The course structure is prescribed and follows strict guidelines agreed by both faculties. Students complete 48 credit points of engineering management/professional engineering subjects and 48 credit points of business administration subjects. There are no elective options in this course. In order to receive two qualifications within two years, students are required to stay enrolled in the course for all two years of full-time study. Students cannot exit the course after one year with a Master of Engineering Management or complete the Master of Engineering Management (C04275) (totalling 72 credit points) and expect to complete 24 credit points in this course to receive a Master of Business Administration.
