Overview
The Bachelor of Design (Honours) in Integrated Product Design prepares students for a career in the global product design industry, from boutique design practice or service design to large-scale industrial production and beyond.
The Honours program allows students to undertake self-determined, critical research and apply this to a specific project.
UTS believes a hands-on approach is fundamental for every aspiring designer. As such, the students' starting point is the individual design and making of an object. Throughout their studies students learn how to design, prototype and test solutions using the latest technologies in the faculty's digital and fabrication workshops.
Course aims
Alongside a strong technical base, the degree applies the creative problem solving required to design experiences that make a difference to everyday life, whether in developing economies or digital cultures. Central to this approach is an understanding of the relationships between objects, culture, economy, technology, business and human behaviour.
This integrated approach makes graduates ready to work both locally and internationally. Students benefit from significant exposure to industry projects and global travel studios. Collaborations with local companies include Glarce Eyewear, Second Road, Kimberley Clarke, Cormack Packaging, Electrolux, Enware and King Furniture. UTS has established international connections with companies and institutions across Asia and Europe.
Students learn in a multidisciplinary, team-based environment thanks to the ability to work alongside other disciplines within the university and externally with industry partners.

Career options
Career opportunities for graduates of the Integrated Product Design degree are expanding. Longstanding industrial design roles include working as an in-house designer in a manufacturing company or working as a design consultant. Graduates also work in emerging fields such as service and strategic design or digital interaction design, adapting advanced technologies for new experiences and networked environments. Integrated education also allows graduates to move beyond design and manage production, distribution and marketing of new products. Finally, the degree prepares graduates for further study in specialised fields such as transport design or associated professional disciplines.
Admission requirements
Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline at an appropriate level.
Applicants with a UTS Bachelor of Design in Integrated Product Design (C10304) who have completed the course within the past three years and attained an overall weighted average mark (WAM) of 72.5 or above are made a threshold offer.
Applicants with a UTS Bachelor of Design in Integrated Product Design who have completed the course within the past three years and attained an overall WAM between 70.0 and 72.49 must provide the following additional material in order to be considered for a place:
- a digital portfolio of 10 landscape PDFs (print on A4) that display digital files, scans and/or photographs of original design work done by the applicant (maximum size 5MB)
- a written statement (200–300 words) addressing the applicant's reasons for undertaking honours-level study in design at UTS and the specific learning that they are seeking given their intended career direction on completion of the degree
- a written statement (200–300 words) and project proposal outline that includes a project description, identification of research context, description of specific research focus, and set of design methods, techniques, materials and approaches to be employed, and
- a one-page CV in PDF format that clearly articulates the applicant's design or related experience.
Applicants with a UTS Bachelor of Design in Integrated Product Design who have completed the course four or more years ago must also provide the above additional material.
Applicants with a degree which is equivalent to the UTS Bachelor of Design in Integrated Product Design and who have attained an overall WAM of 70.0 or above must provide the following additional material in order to be considered for a place:
- a verified copy of the candidate's previous academic transcript
- a digital portfolio of 10 landscape PDFs (print on A4) that display digital files, scans and/or photographs of original design work done by the applicant (maximum size 5MB)
- a written statement (200–300 words) addressing the applicant's reasons for undertaking honours-level study in design at UTS and the specific learning that they are seeking given their intended career direction on completion of the degree
- a written statement (200–300 words) and project proposal outline that includes a project description, identification of research context, description of specific research focus, and set of design methods, techniques, materials and approaches to be employed, and
- a one-page CV in PDF format that clearly articulates the applicant's design or related experience.
Students must refer to the inherent requirements for all degrees offered by Design and Architecture in the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building.
The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184.
Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.
International students
International applicants must also attend an interview (via Skype) with the program director. Digital copies of both the academic transcripts and portfolio must be sent to the program director prior to the interview.
Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.
Course duration and attendance
The course is offered on a one-year, full-time or part-time equivalent basis.
