Description
This subject introduces students to the Australian retirement planning process, providing an understanding of the requirements of the process and the impact of those requirements and opportunities on financial planning strategies.
Subject learning objectives (SLOs)
Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
1. | understand the financial planning industry and how it relates to retirement planning; |

3. | understand the variety of retirement and superannuation vehicles; |
4. | understand the relevant taxation implications for contributions, superannuation funds, and payment of benefits; |
5. | develop strategies to advise on retirement planning. |
Teaching and learning strategies
Strategy 1: The provision of lectures to explain the content and outline the theoretical and legal issues involved
Strategy 2: The discussion and analysis of cases to refine and develop the requisite legal knowledge and understanding
Strategy 3: The use of practical examples to develop interpretation, analysis and problem solving skills
Strategy 4: Use of cases and research issues in presentations, to develop skills in interpreting, analysing and synthesising information
Subject Delivery
Weekly seminars over the course of the semester. Each seminar will be a combination of lecture material, tutorial discussion material and student presentations of case studies.
Lecture Format
The lecture will comprise approximately 1.5 hours each week, and will introduce students to the new material being covered.
Tutorial Format and Expectation of Student Participation
Students are expected to be prepared to discuss the tutorial questions each week, which will cover material from the previous lecture. Each student is required to present a case analysis of an assigned case during the semester.

Assessment
Assessment task 1: Presentation based on case, and assignment accompanying presentation.
Intent: | The presentation shows the individual's understanding of the relevant principles and displays the presenter's ability to explain the issues and legal analysis in the cases. The written component displays written communication skills. |

Assessment task 2: Mid-session Test
Intent: | This tests the knowledge and understanding of the students of the principles involved and the application of those principles to problem based scenarios where a timeline applies |

Assessment task 3: Final Exam
Intent: | The examination will be based on short answer questions and problem based case studies. The students will be required to use their knowledge gained during the semester to identify issues in the problems set and to provide realistic solutions to these problems |

Minimum requirements
Students are expected to attain a satisfactory performance in all assessment components. Students must complete all parts of the assessment to pass the course.
