Description

This subject is a capstone subject for the Graduate Certificate in Commercialisation (C11251) (part of the MBA in Entrepreneurship) and brings together knowledge of strategy, business models, innovation, with prior knowledge of accounting, finance, statistics and sales and marketing to help students understand the operation of an early-stage enterprise. Using a practice case study, students are taken through the entrepreneurial process, examining strategy design, market development, product/service development, business model development financial performance and measurement design.

On the completion of this subject students understand how to establish and operate an early-stage enterprise.

Subject objectives

Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
1. Critically analyse and apply strategic and innovation processes involved in the creation of an early stage enterprise
2. Research and synthesise data in order to identify novel business opportunities
3. Explain the role of strategic partnerships and alliances, particularly in relation to venture capital and social networks
4. Understand and demonstrate mastery of the quantitative tools required to undertake a business/opportunity valuation
5. Assess the use of quantitative tools in the commercialization validation process, and the role financial analysis plays in attracting investment capital

This subject also contributes specifically to the following program learning objectives:

  • Research and synthesise data in order to identify novel business opportunities nationally and globally (1.1)
  • Use relevant data and analytical tools for business valuation purposes (1.2)

Contribution to the development of graduate attributes

This subject functions as the capstone for the Graduate Certificate in Commercialisation and brings together knowledge and learning designed to provide students with the ability to understand how to establish and operate an early stage enterprise. The subject will add knowledge in strategy, business models and innovation to accounting, finance, statistics, sales and marketing knowledge gained in prior subjects to prepare students to establish and operate an early stage enterprise.

Teaching and learning strategies

The subject will be offered in a block mode over 4 days. Case study covering the establishment and operation of a successful early stage enterprise will be used as the key teaching and learning material. This material will be supplemented by articles and slide decks. Students will be “walked through” the establishment and operation of an early stage enterprise using the case.

  • Strategy development- corporate, business and operational strategy content and process design.
  • Implementing strategy-designing business models: value chains structures and processes.
  • Managing strategy- performance measurement systems and performance rewards.
  • Strategic innovation models- innovation informed by key success criteria
  • Strategic partnerships and alliances-open innovation and strategy models
  • Designing an early stage enterprise-strategy, business model and financial structures and performance
