Overview
This course provides a unique environment for planners and property developers to develop a mutual understanding of how to balance private and public interests in urban development. It has a strong focus on sustainable urban development.
The Graduate Certificate in Property and Planning is a foundation course for students who go on to study the Master of Planning (C04007) or the Master of Property Development (C04008). Both disciplines require close cooperation and this course shows students how to achieve better urban outcomes through closer partnerships between those building cities and those planning them.
Course aims
The course gives property development students an introduction to the rationale of planning and its legal framework, an introduction to the principles and practice of sustainable urban development and experience in developing a plan for a real-world urban renewal site.
It gives planning students a greater understanding of key issues in property development, such as valuation and feasibility.
The course provides students with a combination of experiential learning experiences, teamwork and exposure to practical skills development, together with a thorough understanding of economic, environmental and other knowledge underpinning urban management and development.
Career options
The degree enables professionals to change careers due to the multidisciplinary nature of the learning. Graduates are in public sector positions, including working for state and local government, and in private consulting and property development firms. There are also careers in strategic planning on major developments and projects, master planning with financial analysis, and the increasingly important area of sub-regional planning.
Admission requirements
Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree, or equivalent, or have completed an Advanced Diploma in the field of the built environment. All applicants must provide a personal statement that clearly articulates their property or planning experience.
The English proficiency requirement for local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184

Course duration and attendance
The course is offered on a one-session, full-time or one-year, part-time basis. It is delivered in face-to-face mode.

Students must complete 24 credit points of core subjects.
