Overview

The Bachelor of Health Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine provides graduates with a professional entry level for the practice of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. It aims to produce professional Chinese medicine practitioners with highly adaptable and practical clinical skills accompanied by a thorough grounding in theory.

The course has a strong history of delivering skilled practitioners and researchers, and is well regarded nationally and internationally. Opportunities exist for overseas clinical internships in the final year of study in Asia, including China (Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Hong Kong Baptist University) and South Korea (Dong Eui University). In addition students may pursue a six-year combined degree with a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, learning Mandarin and studying in China for a year.

Career options

Career options include self-employment in private practice or as part of an interdisciplinary clinical team. Opportunities exist in health care policy development and consultancy; research trial coordination; sales, marketing and product development for herbal and pharmaceutical companies; and community-based organisations with a health service focus.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed an Australian Year 12 qualification, Australian Qualifications Framework Diploma, or equivalent Australian or overseas qualification at the required level.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Assumed knowledge

Any two units of English; and any two units of science.

Biology is recommended.

Course duration and attendance

This course can be completed over four years of full-time study. Students may also be able to complete the course part time, usually at the rate of two subjects a session (a 50 per cent load), taking eight years to complete. Part-time students are required to attend some classes in daytime hours. Full-time attendance involves approximately 24 hours each week at the University. This also involves students practising their skills in the UTS acupuncture and herbal medicine clinics as required during the course.

Course structure

The course comprises 192 credit points of study and consists of eight academic stages, taken over four years of full-time study.

Rules and regulations

To enter the Year 4 clinic, students must have successfully completed:

  • all subjects in Years 1–3
  • all clinical hours attached to clinic level subjects 1–6
  • all WIKIs attached to the clinical hours 1–6
  • a senior first aid certificate, current through to the Year 4 clinic period
  • a police check.

Transfer between UTS courses

Students have the opportunity to transfer into the combined degree of Bachelor of Health Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (C10164). This involves an additional two years of language and culture training in Australia and China.

Professional recognition

The course is accredited by the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia and graduates are eligible for general registration as a Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture practitioner, and for membership with most professional associations.
