Overview

The Bachelor of Design (Honours) in Fashion and Textiles is an internationally recognised degree that gives students the start they need to pursue careers across all facets of the international fashion industry. The degree provides the conceptual knowledge and garment-making skills required to transform creative vision into compelling fashion statements.

The course centres on design studios which integrate practice-oriented learning into specific projects and parallel to the processes that professionals undertake in industry. The honours year allows the development and realisation of major projects as a professional design outcome.

Course aims

The course aims to produce graduates who aspire to the highest level of practice and are capable of adapting to the changing nature of the industry and research by developing creative solutions within the context of rapidly changing global fashion.

The course is designed to provide students with outlook and ambition that extend beyond the University, cultivating a collaborative and global vision of design. The driving force of this course is critical and reflective design practice. It advances critical research skills and challenges students to question, analyse and redefine existing methodologies in fashion and textile practice.

Career options

Career options include womenswear designer, menswear designer, fashion production, art/creative director, textile designer, print designer, fashion forecasting. Some graduates start their own business, while others work within an established company locally or with larger international brands. Graduates may also continue studies at postgraduate level in both coursework or research degrees.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline at an appropriate level.

Students must refer to the inherent requirements for all degrees offered by Design and Architecture in the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

Local students

External local applicants must also attend an interview with the program director. Academic transcripts and portfolio are required at the interview.

Internal UTS applicants require a weighted average mark of at least 72.5 across the three years of the Bachelor of Design in Fashion and Textiles (C10306) to secure guaranteed entry. A student with a weighted average mark of above 70 can enrol in the course with the permission of the program director.

International students

International applicants must also attend an interview (via Skype) with the program director. Digital copies of both the academic transcripts and portfolio must be sent to the program director prior to the interview.

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Course duration and attendance

The course is offered on a one-year, full-time or part-time equivalent basis.

Course structure

Students must complete 48 credit points comprising two 6-credit-point research subjects, one 12-credit-point research subject and one 24-credit-point major project.
