Overview
This course is the first of its kind in Australia to combine the domains of sound and music, and prepare students for new emerging domains that require the confluence of sound in design and interaction.
The course appeals to students with an interest in music, sound design, creative arts, design and technology, or interactive multimedia. It converges creative practice and innovative design solution through music and sound. It offers a unique, contemporary sound and music degree experience by merging art and technology across domains of composition, entertainment and audio technology, as well as combining features of music and audio engineering with interaction design. By the time of graduation, students should have a professional portfolio of creative music and sound design work.
Course aims
Students' learning outcomes include expression through creative practice, and technical fluency across a range of technologies.
Career options
Career options include working in sound design and production across a diverse range of media, communication and design outlets including music, film, animation, web, gaming, interactive digital media, exhibition design and architecture.
Other career options include electronic music composers, computer musicians, sound designers, music producers, new media artists, interactive media designers, digital musical interface designers, and installation artists/sound sculptors.
Admission requirements
Applicants must have completed an Australian Year 12 qualification, Australian Qualifications Framework Diploma, or equivalent Australian or overseas qualification at the required level.
The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 58-66

International students
Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.
Applications
Local students
Local students apply through the Universities Admissions Centre with first round applications closing 31 October, and final round closing 31 January each year.
International students
International students apply through UTS International.
Assumed knowledge
Any two units of English and computer literacy.
Course duration and attendance
The course is offered on a three-year, full-time basis.
Course structure
Students must complete 144 credit points, comprising of 48 credit points of major subjects, 24 credit points of professional sub-major subjects, 24 credit points of core subjects, 24 credit points of a sub-major choice and 24 credit points of electives.
Industrial training/professional practice
Studio-based and professional practice subjects are highly flexible, allowing students to foster their specialisation and interests through practical projects, critical review, documentation development and collaboration with industry professionals.
