Handbook description

Engineers Australia requires that all students graduating from accredited professional engineering courses have a minimum of 12 weeks (or equivalent) of professional practice. This subject assesses students' claims to meeting this requirement. It involves the writing of a report demonstrating learning outcomes and reflecting on experience as well as a seminar presentation to share experiences with other students and learn from them. The assessment tasks and the subject are assessed as pass/fail.

Subject objectives/outcomes

On satisfactory completion of this subject students should be able to:

  1. Meet the requirements for professional practice as required by Engineers Australia for students in accredited professional engineering courses.
  2. Conduct critical self-review and performance evaluation against appropriate criteria as a primary means of tracking personal development needs and achievements.
  3. Demonstrate competent levels in written and oral communication.

Contribution to course aims and graduate attributes

Through a minimum of 12 weeks professional practice students will have the opportunity to apply and build on experience the application on Graduate Attributes. Writing a E-portfolio and presenting their experiences allows them to reflect of the integration of the theory and on their daily activities in order to demonstrate their level of competency in the following Graduates Attributes: being able to manage own time and processes (D.1), learn independently beyond formal education, (D.2), communicate effectively(E.1), works as an effective team member (E.2), perform evaluation against appropriate criteria as a primary means of tracking personal development (F.1), demonstrate awareness of ethical implication of their engineering profession(F.2),and awareness of Workplace Health and Safety regulations. Assessment Item 2: Seminar Presentation

Intent:

Scenario
You are applying for a job with an outstanding organisation and as part of the interview process are expected give a formal presentation to brief them on your past experience, and demonstrate the strengths you would bring to the organisation. You should be prepared to answer questions from the audience.

10 mins

Criteria:
  1. Addressed the Scenario
  2. Gave a clear overview of professional practice activities / experiences
  3. Addressed selection criteria with evidence
  4. Professional presentation style which demonstrated communication competence
  5. Kept to time (10 minutes)
  6. Asked relevant questions of other presenters

All assessment criteria must be assessed at least as "Competent" in order to pass the presentation component of the subject

Assessment Item 3: Professional Practice Evidence

Objective(s):

To prove 450 hrs of Professional Practice in an Engineering environment or its equivalent exposure to related activities.

Proven 450 hrs of Professional Practice

Minimum requirements

In order to pass the subject, you must:

  1. submit a professional practice portfolio as specified in this document and that is of a competent standard; AND
  2. attend and participate in one group seminar presentation session as specified in this document. Your presentation must be of a competent standard. AND
  3. Certified or original Company letter
