Handbook description

Engineers Australia requires that all students graduating from accredited professional engineering courses have a minimum of 12 weeks (or equivalent) of professional practice. This subject assesses students' claims to meeting this requirement. It involves the writing of a report demonstrating learning outcomes and reflecting on experience as well as a seminar presentation to share experiences with other students and learn from them. The assessment tasks and the subject are assessed as pass/fail.

To meet the requirements for professional practice as required by Engineers Australia for students in accredited professional engineering courses

Professional Formation

PF1 - Values and Social Contexts: ability to act responsibly as a professional engineer with due regard to the social and environmental contexts of their practice

Students will reflect on their experience of professional practice with regard to:

  • working as a professional engineering within their field of practice
  • Ethics
  • Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S)
  • Social Responsibility
  • Industrial Relations
  • Personal & Professional Development

They will also listen to the experiences and reflections of other students within their cohort.

Personal Development

PD2 - Community Involvment: ability to participate as an active and informed member of society

Students will also reflect on the notion of social responsibility and its part of being a "professional"

PD3 - Self-fulfilment: ability to identify, take responsibility for, and achieve personal goals.

Student will write a report and present a seminar on their professional practice and learning outcomes

Assessment

Assessment Item 1: Professional Practice Report

Weighting:This subject is assessed as pass/fail. This assessment task must be "passed" in order to pass the subject. See assessment criteria for this task.
Criteria:

  1. Clear overview of professional practice activities / experiences
  2. Documents reflective learning with insightful reflection on professional practice experiences (mandatory)
  3. Adequately addresses professional formation (mandatory)
  4. Adequately addresses personal development (mandatory)
  5. Adequately addresses academic development
  6. Demonstrates knowledge in social responsibility of your role as an engineer (mandatory)
  7. Demonstrates ethical practice as an engineer (mandatory)
  8. Demonstrates awareness of Industrial relation issues
  9. Demonstrates knowledge of Health and safety workplace and profession
  10. Report demonstrates communication competence (quality of layout, structure, expression, grammar, spelling)
  11. CV is up to date and of a professional quality

Overall mark is out of 100. To gain a "pass" in the report, all of the following criteria must be met:

  • on-time submission
  • 50 marks or more from the numbered criteria above
  • no zero marks for any of the numbered criteria above
  • all "Mandatory" elements marked "Adequated" are met

Assessment Item 2: Seminar Presentation

Intent:

Scenario

You are applying for a job with an outstanding organisation and as part of the interview process are expected give a formal presentation to brief them on your past experience, and demonstrate the strengths you would bring to the organisation. You should be prepared to answer questions from the audience.

Weighting:This subject is assessed as pass/fail. To be eligible for a pass in the subject, this assessment task must be "passed". See assessment criteria for this task
Criteria:

  1. Address the Scenario
  2. Gave a clear overview of professional practice activities / experiences
  3. Gave an overview of learning outcomes
  4. Addressed professional formation, personal development & academic development
  5. Described one key lesson learnt from professional practice activities
  6. Described learning outcomes not able to be learnt from formal study
  7. Provided sound advice to other students
  8. Professional presentation style which demonstrated communication competence
  9. Kept to time (10 minutes)

All assessment criteria must be assessed at least as "Adequate" in order to pass the presentation component of the subject

Assessment Item 3: Professional Practice Evidence

Objective(s):

To prove 450 hrs of Professional Practice in an Engineering environment or its equivalent exposure to related activities.

Weighting:This subject is assessed as pass/fail. This assessment task must be "passed" in order to pass the subject. See assessment criteria for this task.
Criteria:

Proven 450 hrs of Professional Practice

Minimum requirements

In order to pass the subject, you must:

  1. submit a professional practice report as specified in this document and that is of a satisfactory standard; AND
  2. attend and participate in one group seminar presentation session as specified in this document. Your presentation must be of a satisfactory standard.
