Overview
This course is for people who want to practise in-depth journalism in any medium. It has been designed to build on more basic reporting, researching and storytelling skills to develop new knowledge, break stories and produce in-depth projects across the media. The course is underpinned by a commitment to access to knowledge and information and the role of investigative journalism in democracy.
Innovative ways of involving audiences in producing investigative journalism are explored. Students may produce work for their own media outlets or through the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism, which provides a professional setting for work produced in UTS journalism courses.
Course aims
Graduates of the program:
- have cutting edge information retrieval skills
- can produce high quality in-depth stories in chosen media
- understand how new media technologies are reshaping investigative journalism
- understand the significance of the role of investigative journalism in local, regional and global contexts
- understand the links between history and practice of investigative journalism, public access to information and democracy, and
- understand how to make investigative journalism relevant to a range of audiences.
Career options
Career options include a reporter for all media; researcher for media, documentary or non-government organisations; book writing and publishing work; and a journalism educator. Journalists and other professionals in the field are able to enhance their skills in their chosen career.
Admission requirements
Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.
Applicants who have completed a bachelor's, graduate diploma or master's in any field of study, or a graduate certificate in the same field of study, plus at least three years work experience in journalism can apply.
If applicants do not meet these criteria they can submit a personal statement with a CV demonstrating they already have the knowledge and skills that students learn in the UTS foundation postgraduate subject 57011 Research and Reporting for Journalism.
The English proficiency requirement for local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 7.0 overall with a writing score of 7.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 600 overall with TWE of 5.0, internet based: 100 overall with a writing score of 23; or DEEP: B+; or PTE: 75

Recognition of prior learning
Students who successfully complete this course and who are admitted to the graduate diploma or master's course are eligible for recognition of prior learning for completed subjects.
Course duration and attendance
This course is offered on a one-year, part-time basis.
Course structure
Students complete a total of 24 credit points, comprising two 8-credit-point core subjects, plus one 8-credit-point elective from a specified list of options.
Students are required to undertake at least 8 credit points a semester.
