Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Online Journalism is for people who wish to acquire writing, editing and technological skills to work in online journalism. It is especially suited to experienced journalists in any medium wanting to upgrade skills and gain professional technological expertise to adjust to the converging platforms.

The course has been designed to build on traditional journalistic skills and to teach digital research methods and multi-platform technological expertise. It has close links with the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism, which provides a professional setting for work produced during the period of study.

Course aims

Graduates of the program:

  • have strong online reporting, editing and production skills
  • are equipped to adapt to a digital environment with additional skills and intellectual depth
  • have a knowledge and critical understanding of the changing media environment
  • strive to promote the important role of professional and ethical journalism in the service of the public, and
  • have an understanding of the role of the media in local, regional, national and global contexts.

Career options

Career options include reporter or editor in local, corporate, national or international media organisations with an online arm. Journalists and other professionals in the field are able to enhance the skills in their chosen career.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

Applicants who have completed a bachelor's, graduate diploma or master's in any field of study, or a graduate certificate in the same field of study, plus at least three years work experience in journalism can apply.

If applicants do not meet these criteria they can submit a personal statement with a CV demonstrating they already have the knowledge and skills that students learn in the UTS foundation postgraduate subject 57011 Research and Reporting for Journalism.

The English proficiency requirement for local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 7.0 overall with a writing score of 7.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 600 overall with TWE of 5.0, internet based: 100 overall with a writing score of 23; or DEEP: B+; or PTE: 75

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

Recognition of prior learning

Students who successfully complete this course and who are admitted to the graduate diploma or master's course are eligible for recognition of prior learning for completed subjects.

Course duration and attendance

This course is offered on a one-year, part-time basis.

Course structure

Students complete a total of 24 credit points, comprising two 8-credit-point core subjects, plus one 8-credit-point elective from a specified list of options.

Students are required to undertake at least 8 credit points a semester.
