Handbook description

Engineers Australia requires that all students graduating from accredited professional engineering courses have a minimum of 12 weeks (or equivalent) of professional practice. This subject assesses students' claims to meeting this requirement. It involves the writing of a report demonstrating learning outcomes and reflecting on experience as well as a seminar presentation to share experiences with other students and learn from them. The assessment tasks and the subject are assessed as pass/fail.

Subject objectives/outcomes

Objective

To meet the requirements for professional practice as required by Engineers Australia for students in accredited professional engineering courses

Learning Outcomes

Professional Formation

PF1 - Values and Social Contexts: ability to act responsibly as a professional engineer with due regard to the social and environmental contexts of their practice

Students will reflect on their experience of professional practice with regard to:

  • working as a professional engineering within their field of practice

Provide opportunities for students to integrate core and fields of practice specialist knowledge in project based work; and to examine how the knowledge applies in a workplace context.

  • applying tools and methodologies of a field of practice in a design project
  • developing knowledge of organisational and social contexts of a chosen field of practice
  • applying skills and academic knowledge in a workplace

Stages 7 & 8 - Focus on becoming a reflective practitioner

Provide situations and resources for developing an awareness and facility for critically reflective practice.

  • Developing a critical awareness of the interdependence of different professions, academic disciplines, and community interests in relation to the practice of engineering
  • gaining skills and experience in an interdisciplinary practice of engineering
  • gaining experience in self-directed learning and research
  • carrying out major engineering projects which require both theoretical and practical competencies
