Handbook description

The goal of technology and innovation management is to effectively manage the invention, design, development, production, transfer and use of technology within an organisation. This subject brings together knowledge from engineering and management disciplines. Emphasis is placed on the importance of managing the performance of the entire product and process development cycle. Topics include: technological change management, assessment and evaluation of technology, technology policy development, and new product and process development. Within this framework, specific technology management tools and techniques are evaluated and applied. These include quality function deployment, design for manufacture, concurrent engineering and robust design methods.

Subject objectives/outcomes

The objective of this subject is to provide students with an overview of the issues and techniques associated with technology and innovation management.

On successful completion of this subject, students should understand:
a) The scope of technological change management issues in the engineering environment
b) How to apply appropriate technology and innovation management tools
c) The concept to disposal cycle of product and process development
d) How to deploy a customer focus throughout the innovation process.
e) The importance of teamwork - in particular multidisciplinary teamwork
f) How to find, use and acknowledge information through research and referencing

Teaching and learning strategies

The standard subject delivery consists of lectures, class discussions and activities, readings and assignments. As in all 6 credit point Engineering subjects, you are expected to spend an average of 9 hours per week on this subject. Students are expected to come to lectures prepared to discuss the readings for each week. The required preparation for each week is listed above the week’s lecture information in the weekly schedule and should be completed before that lecture. The subject is also offered in distance mode, with discussions, assignments and activities on UTSOnline.

Minimum requirements

In order to pass the subject, you must:

  • Complete, and submit each of the two assignments; AND
  • Earn an overall total of 50 marks or more for the subject AND
  • Achieve at result of at least 40% in the final exam.

The LRM (Lectures and Reading Materials) for 49016 Technology and Innovation Management should be purchased from the Union Shop on level 3, near the canteen area. They only accept CASH. The LRM is revised and updated this semester so the February 2010 version of the LRM is the current version. There is no other textbook required for this subject however students are expected to consult additional material for assignments.
