Student learning centres

ELSSA Centre

The ELSSA Centre is the UTS centre for academic language development. It works closely with faculties to provide integrated discipline-specific subjects and programs in academic writing, reading, speaking, critical thinking and cultural knowledge to meet the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students completing their degree in English. The centre also offers an award program.

Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning

Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning provides a central meeting place for Australian Indigenous students studying at UTS. At Jumbunna, Indigenous students, support staff and researchers are committed to improving education and research outcomes that benefit Indigenous communities. Jumbunna focuses on:

  • activities that support the recruitment, retention and graduation rates of Indigenous Australians
  • activities that support the teaching and learning issues of Indigenous students and the promotion of Indigenous studies within the University
  • research and advocacy of issues of concern to the Indigenous community
  • advice and expertise in Indigenous areas as a contribution to the UTS community, the Australian Indigenous community, and at national and international forum.

Student services team

The Jumbunna student services team provides a range of academic and cultural support to Indigenous students studying at UTS. Services and facilities available to students include academic and tutorial assistance, cultural activities, cultural affirmation programs, group and private study areas, student common room and kitchen, and two computer laboratories at City and Kuring-gai campuses.

Mathematics and ICT Study Centre

The Mathematics and ICT Study Centre offers free assistance with mathematics, statistics and basic computing to students from all faculties. The centre can also assist students with common computing packages such as wordprocessing, spreadsheets, presentation managers, Mathematica, Minitab and SPSS.

The centre runs subjects to assist with particular courses, for example, mathematics for nursing, and workshops such as examination preparation workshops for specific mathematics subjects. It also runs short bridging courses in mathematics, statistics and computing, and a volunteer peer tutoring program. Centre staff are active in education research and the development of resources.

Physics Learning Centre

The Department of Physics and Advanced Materials operates a drop-in Physics Learning Centre (as demand requires) on level 13 of the Tower Building at City campus, Broadway. Academic staff members are available at certain times during the semester to assist students with problems they have with their first-year physics studies.
