Handbook description

This is an introductory subject for clinicians who are expected to manage a ward or unit. It introduces the concept of management theory and practice in health care settings. No experience in or prior knowledge of management is required.

Subject objectives/outcomes

On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  1. evaluate a variety of management theories, their application and appropriateness in the context of the Australian health care system
  2. understand the impact of organisational structures and processes on managing clinical work
  3. compare and contrast the roles of clinicians and managers
  4. analyse the skills and knowledge required to manage human resources effectively
  5. evaluate a range of staffing and patient care models
  6. effectively manage a department, ward or unit, and analyse and evaluate own performance and that of their unit.
