This is an introductory subject for clinicians who are expected to manage a ward or unit. It introduces the concept of management theory and practice in health care settings. No experience in or prior knowledge of management is required.
Subject objectives/outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- evaluate a variety of management theories, their application and appropriateness in the context of the Australian health care system
- understand the impact of organisational structures and processes on managing clinical work
- compare and contrast the roles of clinicians and managers
- analyse the skills and knowledge required to manage human resources effectively
- evaluate a range of staffing and patient care models
- effectively manage a department, ward or unit, and analyse and evaluate own performance and that of their unit.
