The clinical experience in this subject enables students to achieve the knowledge, skills and competency for midwifery practice through the attainment of a range of competencies and minimum requirements as elaborated on in the Professional Experience Record and required by the New South Wales Nurses' Registration Board.
Subject objectives/outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- demonstrate competency in midwifery practice in providing care of a woman and her baby in pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period
- apply knowledge of the common medications used in midwifery practice and evaluate the benefits and risks of their use and demonstrate the safe administration of medications including competence in drug calculations
- engage with women in order to obtain, interpret and record a detailed antenatal history; perform a comprehensive psychological and social assessment; and accurately assess and evaluate findings from an antenatal visit
- demonstrate the capacity to use aseptic techniques as necessary in midwifery practice and understand and be able to apply infection control measures
- demonstrate competence in providing care to women experiencing normal pregnancy, birth and puerperium
- demonstrate an understanding of cultural safety in relation to midwifery.
