92611 Complex Case Management

UTS: Nursing, Midwifery and Health: Nursing, Midwifery and Health
Credit points: 6 cp

Subject level: Postgraduate

Result Type: Grade and marks

Requisite(s): 24 credit points of completed study

Handbook description

This subject aims to bring together the various threads of complex case management. Students use their knowledge of pathophysiological events to frame appropriate clinical practice responses. From their understanding of normal trajectories of common health conditions, students are able to identify deviations from standard patterns and critically analyse practitioners' management responsibilities. Students develop advanced techniques of health promotion in relation to complex case management and have well developed risk management skills relating to specified clinical situations.

Subject objectives/outcomes

On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • critically analyse nurse practitioner management responsibilities (ANMC competencies 2.1, 2.3, 3.1)
  • apply principles of case management to the student's area of specialised nursing practice (ANMC competencies 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3)
  • identify normal trajectories of common health problems and analyse deviations in patient/client health status (ANMC competencies 1.3, 1.4)
  • apply an advanced understanding of pathophysiologic processes to the management of patients with interdependent health problems (ANMC competencies 1.1, 1.2, 1.4)
  • apply high levels of clinical judgement to the management of complex health problems (ANMC competencies 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4)
  • determine, prioritise and justify clinical decisions using the best available evidence (ANMC competencies 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4)
  • model effective holistic nursing care and collaborative practice as a member of the multidisciplinary team (ANMC competencies 2.1, 3.1)
  • demonstrate advanced techniques of health promotion and well developed risk management skills (ANMC competencies 2.1, 2.3)
  • generate new approaches to the extension of nursing knowledge and delivery of expert care.
  • Contribution to graduate profile

This subject aims to bring together the various threads of complex case management for clinicians working at an advanced level. From the understanding of normal trajectories of common health conditions, students identify deviations from standard patterns and critically analyse management responsibilities. Students are encouraged to use their knowledge of pathophysiological events to frame appropriate clinical practice responses, and analyse, synthesise and integrate advanced theoretical principles and concepts related to complex case management. Students develop advanced techniques of health promotion in relation to complex cases and further develop risk management skills relating to specified clinical situations.
