This subject focuses on the development of educational leadership in specialist nurses and midwives who seek to influence health care practice in their area of expertise and advance clinical excellence in others through the process of education. Through action learning, students are prepared to undertake the roles of change agent, mentor, critical companion and facilitator of learning. Students develop an understanding of education as a strategic building block in the creation of a rich clinical learning environment.
Subject objectives/outcomes
On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
- appreciate the influence of organisational systems, clinical systems and models of care on practice development and educational leadership
- evaluate the impact of education on the clinical environment
- critically review educational models for practice development pertinent to nursing and midwifery
- understand how educational leadership can be effective in a team-based work environment
- apply the theory of action learning to practice development
- distinguish between the roles of preceptor and mentor
- determine and develop the attributes required for effective mentorship and critical companionship with particular reference to emotional intelligence
- appreciate the role of reflection in practice development, mentorship and professionalism
- strategically plan for a career in educational leadership.
Content
This subject focuses on the development of educational leadership in specialist nurses who seek to influence health care practice in their areas of expertise and the advancement of clinical excellence in others. Specifically, students are prepared to undertake the roles of change agent, mentor, critical companion and facilitator of learning. Students develop an understanding of educational leadership as a strategic building block in the creation of a rich clinical learning environment that promotes optimum care delivery. The process of action learning is seen as pivotal to this development.
