Handbook description

This elective subject allows self-directed students to develop their own program of study based on a defined research or industry project. As such, it allows students to develop specific expertise in a chosen vocational or academic area within the events, arts, sport or tourism field. The subject provides students with the freedom to define their own study agenda and pursue this with the support of a relevant academic staff supervisor.

Subject objectives/outcomes

On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

1. Design a project or program of study to provide answers to a specific research question.
2. Undertake self directed research or project work.
3. Produce a report or journal article that is of publishable quality.

Teaching and learning strategies

This subject is an independent research project and as such the student is assigned to a subject supervisor for the semester. At a minimum, it is expected that the student and academic supervisor will meet or communicate on a weekly basis. A combination of research literature, media and electronic resources will be provided to enhance appreciation of the theoretical concepts covered in the project.

Content

Subject content will be established prior to the commencement of semester through a 'learning contract'. This contract will be based on a formal written proposal to the subject coordinator by a student wishing to undertake this subject, submitted before the end of the semester immediately preceding that in which the subject is proposed to be undertaken.

This proposal will include: justification for undertaking the subject; project objectives; a preliminary outline of the work program; and a preliminary reading and resource list.

Students should have identified an appropriate staff supervisor and discussed the project before preparing their submission and enrolling in the subject. All submissions must be approved by the Deputy Head of School or nominated school representative.
