Handbook description
This subject requires students to apply the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout their course to a particular industry-based project. Students carry through the activities outlined in the project proposal they prepared in Industry Project 1, with the aim of solving a selected management problem on behalf of an industry client. Students work closely with the industry client and under the supervision of an academic supervisor. This project is the culmination of the practical, professional stream of the Bachelor of Management in Tourism and Bachelor of Management in Events and Leisure.
Subject objectives/outcomes
On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
- Apply academic skills, principles and theories to the development of an informed, practical solution to a contemporary management problem in the area of tourism, leisure or events.
- Employ appropriate problem solving methods, research techniques and practices with the intent of informing the resolution of a specific management problem.
- Analyse and interpret gathered data so as to draw conclusions and make recommendations or propose strategies to solve a management problem for an industry client.
- Prepare a professional written report that presents the solution to a management problem and articulates the reasoning behind that solution.
- Present, in a structured, professional manner, a verbal report on an industry-based management project.
Contribution to graduate profile
This subject is designed to integrate the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the course and to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to apply these to a practical tourism, leisure or event management situation. The subject contributes to the development of the student's professional skills by effectively placing them in a consultancy relationship with a particular industry client, and requiring them to present a substantial professional report in both written and verbal forms.
Teaching and learning strategies
For most of the semester the student will be working on a self-directed basis with their industry client and under the supervision of an academic staff member of the School of Leisure, Sport and Tourism. Where the topic is sufficiently demanding, the project may be undertaken by a pair of students. Projects completed by pairs of students must reflect a greater depth and/or breadth. There will be a small number of lectures on presentation and report writing, and one compulsory progress interview with the supervisor. Content for this subject will be supported by UTSOnline.
