Handbook description

As the Australian sport industry becomes more professional and complex, the number of agencies involved in the delivery of sport products and services multiplies. This subject examines individual agencies to determine their respective input into the sport environment and explores the relationships and interconnectedness between such groups. It assesses and analyses the impact of business, the various arms of government and volunteers on both mass and elite sport to provide a coordinated perspective of the sport industry.

Subject objectives/outcomes

On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

  1. describe and discuss the structure and scope of the Australian sport industry including the relationships between the organisations that comprise the industry
  2. critically analyse and evaluate the purpose, function, goods and services of organisations within the Australian sport industry
  3. critically review a specific sporting organisation in terms of sustainability.

Contribution to graduate profile

This core subject in the Bachelor of Human Movement and the Bachelor of Management in Sport and Exercise programs examines the role and impact of government, corporations and volunteers on the development and provision of sport at both the elite and mass level. It reviews the relationships between the different sectors of the sport industry and addresses several critical issues.

Teaching and learning strategies

The lectures and tutorials include a range of teaching and learning strategies. Key concepts are taught using individual and group exercises, discussion of scenarios, problem solving, case studies and DVD analysis. Some lectures will be conducted by guest speakers representing different sectors in the sport industry. Content for this subject will be supported by UTSOnline.

  • Coordinating the sports system and the future of sport — communication between the four pyramids of Australian sport
