This subject provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the development of human physical capacities, strength, power, flexibility and cardiorespiratory fitness. Competence in a range of track and field and dance activities is required.
Subject objectives/outcomes
On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
- describe the relationships between human motor development and the performance of skills and movement patterns in dance and track and field
- demonstrate competence in the performance of dance and track and field activities
- identify the relationships between the mechanical, physiological, sociological and behavioural aspects of performance in dance and track and field
- demonstrate skill and knowledge of the rules in a range of track and field events to a prescribed level
- discuss the biomechanical and physiological aspects of track and field and apply them from a teaching perspective.
Contribution to graduate profile
This subject provides students with the conceptual knowledge and skills related to the development of human physical capacity. Competence in various dance and track and field activities will be required. It will serve to extend physical literacy by increasing the physical functioning of the student. All Performance Studies subjects are compulsory for students who wish to be accredited as PDHPE teachers by the NSW Institute of Teachers.

- Social dance and DanceSport techniques including Ceroc, Cha Cha Cha, Jive, Rumba, Salsa, Samba
- Advanced social dance skills — footwork, stance, alignments, posture
- Music interpretation — beat values and bars, tempo, timing and rhythm
- Combining dance steps
- Verbal and non-verbal communication, leading and following
- Strategies for learning and creating dance steps and sequences
- Track and field techniques
- Physiology, biomechanics and psychology of track and field activities
- Teaching track and field skills
- Developing training plans
- Medical aspects of track and field
