Handbook description

This subject examines the growth and extent of water-based recreation in Australian society; the administrative structures which have evolved to cater for water-based recreation; and the skills and resources necessary to program for selected water-based activities.

Subject objectives/outcomes

On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

  1. Detail the role and administrative structures of aquatic-based agencies.
  2. Evaluate a range of facilities aquatic-based services, events and programs.
  3. Provide the management/organisational and leadership skills necessary to implement an aquatic-based recreation event/program.

Contribution to graduate profile

The focus of this elective subject is on leadership, programming and event co-ordination in aquatic environments. Therefore, a high level of organisation and structure is required by the student in preparation of the various components of this subject. The subject serves to introduce students to the practical implications/skills of conducting aquatic-based leisure/ recreation programs and events. It introduces students to the practical side of leisure, sport and tourism. They gain water based leadership and event management skills including the Austswim Certificate

Teaching and learning strategies

A range of learning strategies will be used ranging from lectures, practical sessions, guest lectures, field visits, and audio visual presentations. This subject will normally be taught in a three hour block. Content for this subject will be supported by UTSOnline.

Content

  • Aquatic -based agencies: Structures and administration; programs/events; finance and promotion
  • Aquatic-based event management and recreational activities such as regattas, carnivals, aquatic special events and the organization leadership programming or them
  • The subject will require students to acquire or have completed an externally run AUSTSWIM training course including Senior Resuscitation
