Topics covered include: the development of an accounting framework for small and medium enterprises; the selection of computer hardware and microcomputer accounting packages; and general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, stock and cash book; comparison and critical evaluation of various accounting packages.
Subject objectives/outcomes
On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
- use the following modules in an accounting software package: General Ledger, Cash Book, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable and Inventory to process accounting data and produce the accompanying accounting reports
- export data from a standard accounting package to standard financial reporting accounting software program and produce statutory financial reports the program
Contribution to graduate profile
Given that accounting information is central in the management of SMEs, this unit as a component of the small business sub-major exposes students to the methods used by SMEs to process and report accounting data to management and to external authorities.
Teaching and learning strategies
Using computer based accounting software, students are asked to work through topics in their highly illustrated text book. At the completion of each major task they are asked to check their work against the solutions provided. At the completion of each topic students would have acquired the skills required to attempt and successfully complete their assignments. As stated the objective of the subject is to show students how to use accounting software to record, process and report accounting information.
The approach is cumulative that is start with simple situations and move towards more complex ones. This is reflected by the three assignments that are set for assessment.
In the first assignment, students are asked to setup a business and process transactions and produce routine accounting reports for a business using only the General Journal (for data entry) and the General Ledger module.
In the second assignment, students are asked to setup a business and process transactions using, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Inventory, General Ledger and Cash Book modules, and as in Assignment 1, produce routine accounting reports.
In the third assignment students are asked to produce statutory reports from data.
