Subject objectives/outcomes

On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

  1. demonstrate a detailed and synthesised understanding of the environment in which business operates in two Asian countries
  2. analyse the pressures, problems, challenges, and opportunities being faced by expatriate managers in a foreign country
  3. engage in critical self appraisal in adapting to and applying interpersonal skills in a foreign culture
  4. integrate and synthesise prior learning and to reconcile theory with practice in international management

Contribution to graduate profile

International Management Country Study is a capstone subject in the International Business major. It provides the opportunity to synthesise and integrate previous studies with an international business orientation. It involves travel to a minimum of two Asian countries in order to investigate management practices and business conditions and comparison of findings with theoretical constructs introduced and discussed throughout the major. Through pre-departure seminars, intensive personal experience in other cultures, site visits and interviews with expatriate managers operating in another country, students will have the opportunity to integrate and apply prior learning to particular international business situations and extend their understanding of management in a foreign country.

Teaching and learning strategies

The overseas visit is the focal point of the subject, but there is extensive pre and post travel study. Students must prepare for the visit by extensive reading and subsequent to their return, synthesise the material covered in a comprehensive report. Prior to departure and whilst away, extensive briefings, discussions and conversations are held to assist students to process their experiences.

Assessment

Assessment item 1: Reflective journal (Individual)

Objective(s): 1-3
Weighting: 50%
Task: Whilst overseas, students must maintain a reflective journal. The purpose of the journal is to assist them in detailing events and experiences, clarifying the impression that these had upon them, and their own reaction to them. In the journal they are also required to report on business conditions as identified in industry visits and lectures by officials. This assessment addresses objectives 1 to 3.

Assessment item 2: Country analysis (Individual)

Objective(s): 4
Weighting: 50%
Task: The country analysis requires students to complete a business study of a county they have visited on the tour. The analysis draws upon both written and experiential sources. Students must describe the general business conditions pertaining to the country and detail opportunities and problems faced by Australian business. This assessment addresses objective 4. There are only a limited number of students undertaking the country study. As a result the lecturer is in close contact with students on a regular basis and will detect any attempts at plagiarism.
