Japanese 5 is designed for students who have completed Japanese 4 or its equivalent. The subject is designed to consolidate and further develop students' reading and writing skills. In this subject, students learn Japanese word-processing skills and internet skills. Students also learn to communicate with sociocultural appropriateness in routine social and limited vocational situations using the registers that best reflect the social distance between speakers. Upon completion of this subject students are expected to have attained 'limited social proficiency' and be able to satisfy routine and limited work demands. By the end of Japanese 5, students are expected to be able to read and write approximately 470 kanji. The learning of the sociocultural use of the language is an integral part of this subject. Students are also required to use a range of resources that facilitate independent language learning.

Assessment: This subject has a combination of continuous assessment and final examinations for speaking, listening, reading and writing. Further details are available in the subject outline distributed in class during the first week of teaching.
