97201 Japanese Language and Culture 1
8cp; 4hpwThis subject provides students who have no prior knowledge of the Japanese language with basic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. The subject aims to develop students' communicative competence in a range of everyday social situations. In this subject students learn to read and write the hiragana and katakana scripts as well as 50 kanji. Students also learn to read authentic materials, such as simple menus and advertisements. By the end of this subject students are expected to be able to understand and use everyday greetings, introduce themselves, discuss locations and daily routines. The learning of the sociocultural use of the language is an integral part of this subject. Students are also required to use a range of resources that facilitate independent language learning.
Assessment: This subject has a combination of continuous assessment and final examinations for speaking, listening, reading and writing. Further details are available in the subject outline distributed in class during the first week of teaching.
