97105 Chinese Language and Culture 5

This subject is designed for students who have successfully completed Chinese 4 or its equivalent. It further develops students' communicative competence in general social interactions with a focus on developing practical writing skills.

Students learn to use the language and express themselves flexibly and effectively for social purposes. They learn to understand extended and more complex speech, and the main point of common radio, TV programs and films. Students acquire approximately 2000 characters, and learn to read and comprehend long and complex texts with a range of written styles. They also learn to write clear, well-structured texts, discussing social and cultural issues with personal points of view and understand Chinese culture and contemporary Chinese society.

Assessment: This subject has a combination of continuous assessment and final examinations for speaking, listening, reading and writing. Further details are available in the subject outline distributed in class during the first week of teaching.
