79004 Environmental Law and Science

This subject introduces the science student to concepts of environmental law and the interface between environmental law and science. It establishes a foundation for the subject 79023 Environmental Forensics Law, and it complements Environmental Management by setting out the legal framework which supports the management of natural resources at both a federal and state level. It introduces the students to legal research.

Topic areas in the subject include:

  • an introduction to legal concepts, sources of law and legal institutions with a focus on environmental law
  • legal research to look for case law and legislation
  • the ethical relationship between humans and the natural environment
  • the creation of environmental laws at an international, federal, state and local government level
  • application and legal interpretation of the precautionary principle
  • environmental impact assessment at both federal and state levels
  • natural resource management plans under the Environmental Protection and Biological Conservation Act 2000 (Cwth)
  • current topical environmental issues, such as threatened species, water issues, climate change, focusing on NSW legislation
  • the role of science in the courts.

2009 contribution for post-2008 Commonwealth-supported students: $1,084.62
