68416 Computational Physics

6cp; 4hpw
Requisite(s): 33360 Mathematics for Physical Science OR 68038 Advanced Mathematics and Physics

This subject introduces the key elements of computational physics such as methods for solving physical problems numerically and the use of computers for simulating the dynamics of large or complex systems. Numerical techniques including matrix manipulation, fast fourier transforms, iterative optimisation and differential equation solvers are developed and applied to practical problems such as the simulation of atomic motion in a gas. Computer architecture, data structures, image processing and visualisation are also introduced and problems associated with image analysis investigated.

Typical availability

Autumn semester, City campus (from 2010)
