This subject covers the following topics: chemical equilibrium, acid-base theory and chemical kinetics in physical chemistry; coordination compounds in inorganic chemistry; and organic chemistry, molecular structures and chemical reactions of carbon compounds including alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and aromatic hydrocarbons; alcohols, phenols and ethers; aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters and amides; amines; and halogen compounds. There is a laboratory program which complements the learning experiences in the lectures and tutorials. The subject also aims to enhance students' thinking skills, to foster their ability to work cooperatively with their peers and to assist in the development of their communication skills.
