Graduate subject – Journalism – 400 level
This subject aims to develop and build on the skills and sound journalism professional practice gained in the prerequisite subject. Students focus on news and news feature stories within a round. A round is a specialist area where a reporter can develop contacts and sources and build expertise. In this context students write to deadline and complete a portfolio of work to the standard of publication. During the subject there is discussion and analysis of current news and current affairs debates.
Assessment: All reporting assignments in UTS journalism courses:
Identifying sources: All news or feature stories submitted as assignments in all our courses must be accompanied by a final separate page listing names and contact details for all key sources cited in the story, i.e. name, company or organisation where relevant, phone number. Students must also indicate whether they were in contact/interviewed the source in person, by phone, or email.
Deadlines: Deadlines for journalism assignments must be strictly observed, as they are in the workplace. An automatic penalty of 10 per cent will be deducted from any assignment received after deadline (unless a variation has been negotiated ahead of time with your lecturer, or if conditions apply where students have been eligible to apply for Special Consideration).
