Increasingly, biological principles are being integrated into engineered systems to create innovative and effective design solutions. This subject covers fundamental biological science including approaches to characterising ecosystems, ecological principles, ecosystem functions and types, environmental microbiology, nutrient cycles and toxicology. The way this knowledge is utilised for ecosystem restoration and engineered treatment systems involving wetlands, bioremediation and waterway rehabilitation is examined.
