48771 Communication Theory

6cp
Requisite(s): 48770 Signal Processing
Fields of practice: Telecommunications Engineering program
Undergraduate
Subject coordinator: Sam Reisenfeld

This subject aims to introduce the fundamental trade-off between power and bandwidth resources in the design of efficient communication systems. The link budget is introduced for the design of communication links.

After completing the subject, students are able to:

  • analyse the bit error rate performance of digital communication systems
  • simulate the bit error rate performance of digital communication systems
  • choose a modulation which is suited to the system requirements
  • choose an error detection or correction code which is suited to the system requirements, and
  • understand the fundamentals of synchronisation in digital communication systems

Topics covered include: digital modulation and demodulation, optimal detection, signal bandwidth determination, random processes, correlation, power spectral density, bit error rate analysis, bit error rate simulation, error detection and correction coding, the power and bandwidth trade-off of digital modulation and coding types, link budgets, and synchronisation in digital communication systems.

Assessment: Typically assessment in this subject includes quizzes, assignments, and a final examination.
