48660 Dynamics and Control
6cpRequisite(s): 48640 Machine Dynamics
Fields of practice: Mechanical Engineering program and Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering program.
Undergraduate
Subject coordinator: Associate Professor Nong Zhang
The objectives of this subject are to develop students' skill in identifying and understanding the dynamics of various mechanical and mechatronic systems; familiarise students with control strategies in vibration control, motion control and process control; provide students with an understanding of various control methods and techniques; familiarise students with control system design methods, such as tuning, compensation, digital control, etc; and teach students to be able to apply control strategies in practical applications. Topics include modelling of dynamic systems, vibration control, motion control, control system design specification, PID control, root-locus method, frequency-domain design methods, digital control and control system implementation. Case studies of engineering applications are also covered.
Assessment: Assignment 1 and 2 (10 per cent each), project 1 and 2 (20 per cent each) and final examination (40 per cent).
